Also, the only differences between "crime and punishment" and Elliot Rodger is that the latter existed, had a bigger kill count, and ended his story more dramatically. So the next time you see someone praise that cringefest of a book, remember that they're basically gushing over a fictive incel and his bullshittery.

I know it’s a psued/tryhard cliche to say the book > the movie but the American psycho book is actually better than the movie. It does a way better job painting a picture of the mental state of Patrick Bateman. If they acted out the murder scenes and sex scenes the way they describe them in the book, the film wouldn’t be allowed to be released. Both sex scenes and murder scenes are insanely graphic. There are sex scenes that go on for like 10 pages in the book describing every position lmao. The author had to actually be psychotic himself to write that shit.

Bret Easton Ellis is a fat gay guy who wishes he had talent. It doesn't take a psychotic to write his books. It just takes a chubby New Yorker with less talent than ambition.

I’ve never read any of his other books but there were some portions of the book where you have to have some sociopathic tendencies yourself to be able to think of it. And I’m not just talking about the murder scenes. It’s mostly about the way he describes how patrick bateman manipulates everybody in any situation he’s in.

It’s not really pseud. The books usually are better because they are:
        >good and popular enough to warrant a movie being made
        >much more time to become invested in the story
Only book I can think of that is both a great book and a great movie(s) is lord of the rings

Oh, that's great. Expect something of the same magnitude. In my experience Crime and punishment felt more easily readable than the other books fromr the Pentateuch.
Another thing that helps is me reading them in slavic language and the names such as Mishkin or Razumihin or Marmeladov actually mean something to me without need to be translated or explained.

They do now that the more normal section of the population has drifted away from the churches and mostly what's left is people who need purpose beyond what god has already given them. I would say as whole coming back to it was a favorable experience but yeah you will encounter some people you wouldn't otherwise choose to interact with and there are cliques within congregations that you might not set right with you but that's going to be present in every organization that doesn't ToS people out for having odd beliefs or values. They're people and people aren't getting any more sane or emotionally stable.

Yes, people who wouldn't have anything else to do. There are people who just like to be in charge of stuff and to feel important and special. Without the church they would be losers but now they have the true knowledge and can feel superior.

If you want to make actual mental gains, find a topic you like and read about that single topic. Read authors with different perspectives, read authors with conflicting views, read deeply into that single subject.
Reading entry tier literature in different subjects pads your bookshelf but doesn't make you grow. You're not learning more than at most a few quotes or fun facts to flex at parties.

I know it's probably kool-aid but I try to buy older textbooks teacher eiditons and wookbooks when they're avaliable and just work though it on my own. There's just something satisfying about them even if they're not remotely optimal and a fictional adult could get through an entire year's course in less than 12 weeks. Simply because the books are better teachers than most teachers.

Many of those books are a complete waste of time. They sound great in theory, in reality life is just way more complicated. Maybe some good information in some of them, but you should build up your own habits based on your own experiences and how you feel like doing things. Similar to lifting programs in a way, people end up figuring out their own thing.

Did for a while. Read most of the western canon, many greeks and a dozen other philosophers since. All of Freud, Jung, Adler, Rogers, and a handful of others. All of Steinbeck, most of Melville, Half of Dostoevsky, all of Camus, A shit load of Old scifi from Wells and CS Lewis' space trilogy, through Clarke and Herbert, all the way through Cixin Liu. Read almost everything ever written by Sagan, Dawkins, Asimov, Chomsky, and some beautiful nonsense by Terence Mckenna and Rupert sheldrake.

Oh and of course our whole fit reading list through rippetoe and the barbell prescription, a few brick textbooks on training physiology and kinesiology, along with just about everything every written about striking or grappling sport in all it's varieties.

After about years of binging literature I realized I was only making myself miserable and lonely for no reason because most people live unexamined lives and prefer to be barely conscious, and find your general skepticism and ability to scrutinize ideas to be offensive and hostile and they will do absolutely anything to drag you down to their level. I don't generally yield to social pressure but the truth is i'm not in college, i'm never going to write much of anything. I'm not a teacher, i'm a personal trainer and pharmacy technician. This was simply a lot of time and effort that I just can't seem to muster anymore. I'm much happier these days focusing on jiuitsu.

Self help books are ok, but getting deep into the genre is the literary version of chasing your own tail. Start actually learning something that interests you. Personally I picked up a math textbook and started with le Greeks.

I have been learning Russian the past 2 years. So now I read through/translate a couple paragraphs of The Brothers Karamazov in the original Russian while I do my cardio on the decline bike machine at high resistance for an hour each morning.
Has really helped me understand the language better and challenges me mentally.

    >learn a new language

Out of all these I mostly want to learn a new language, starting with French. BUT I'm just fully braindead these days and I don't know what's causing it. I'm not being productive at work and when I'm not working I just browse the web aimlessly and scroll tiktok or this website. The only thing I'm grinding hard and seeing gains is gym, everything else in my life is not doing so well. I think my dopamine circuits are fucked. Whenever I should be doing some learning or reading I just rather watch a streamer or random youtube videos and turn my brain off.

You're unironically too intelligent for it, Marx just wrote a bunch of midwitslop. If you can't formulate your arguments into a book that retards can comprehend and come to the same conclusions you have then you have no argument. Such is the case with many political philosophers and most israelites. They obfuscate their exploitative motives and hypocrisy behind semantic bullshit and call themselves geniuses.

I can understand reading one or two. Probably one on the kind of psychology and mechanisms of habits and reinforcement and theories about those kind of things. Then maybe one on the practical applications of that stuff. I don't think it's boring topic much like how you read something like "thinking fast and slow" or "the righteous mind" with no intrest in really applying that to your life or using it feel superior to anyone. Just understanding the animal you are a little better is kind of fun. But people will project all kind of things onto that because they think you're trying to get a leg up on them.

Yeah I'm not about to force myself to dance or play an instrument just to get girls. My hobbies are for my personal enjoyment and i don't care what others think about them.
Although i do wish there were more girls into electronics and mechanical design. Normalfags keep telling me hobbies are important to get girls but they never consider that some hobbies are just done at home and don't interest most girls
