Whats the difference between pull-ups and chin-ups?

What’s the difference between pull-ups and chin-ups? Do they exercise the same muscles so they’re interchangeable or is one better than the other?

Pull ups are harder and primarily work your back muscles, Chin ups are easier and use your biceps a lot more
Do chin ups if pull ups are too hard for you or if you wanna work your biceps

I don’t have a bar right now so I can only do pull-ups over the side of my dorms bunk bed but thanks.

They exercise quite different muscles, I think chinups exercises biceps and chest quite a bit more while pullups exercise back and lats more. Pullups are slightly more awkward so in theory chinups is a little better, but both are important.

How important is form for pull-ups? Like I said I can only do it over the side of my bunk bed and I have to sort of pull up my legs so they don’t touch the bed bellow. What’s the proper form I should be doing?

It doesn't matter. As long as you're doing something with the general idea of a pullup it's going to be somewhat impressive and good for you. Only the 130lbs faggy fag is doing perfect strict pullups every time. With calisthenics it's only your own bodyweight (with potential additions to it with the same plane as your bodyweight) so there is no danger of harming yourself unless you're doing something wild.

form is everything. better to get a couple of perfect reps than several where you are throwing yourself around out of control

Consistency of reps + full rom are important for any exercise, pullups included.
You'll want to make sure you're in a dead hang at the bottom of each rep and you'll want each rep to end at the same place up top. Usually thats chin over the bar, but in your case it'd be chin over the top lip of the bunk bed.
For legs, the position isn't as important, but generally having them in front of your body (hollow body position) is a bit tougher since it puts the working muscles further from the bar. On the bright side you get extra core gains. If you can't make that work due to space constraints then crossing your legs behind you and arching your back is also perfectly acceptable. Just keep your form constant throughout your sets

This is one argument against the counter-jihad types who say Europe will become another caliphate with sharia law. It underestimates the ability of the decadent western liberal culture to corrupt people. It's hard to co-exist with it without it affecting you, some more than others.

would hang out, cuddle and protect. I think it all comes down to grip. Maybe pull-ups are harder on your forearms, and chin-ups would involve your biceps more, I guess.

Pullups will bias your rear delts and mid traps more. Chin ups bias your biceps more. Both have equal effect on your lats and teres.

Pull ups and chin up are very similar exercises. They both have similar levels of lat engagement, but chin-ups tend to be a little bit easier because a supinated grip allows for biceps to assist in the pull vs the brachialis for pull-ups

  15. 1 year ago
    Anonymous

They´re the same exercise. The difference is that chin ups use a supinated grip which allows you to recruit your biceps, which in turn will let you crank out another few reps. With a pull up you use a pronated grip which puts greater stress on your forearm. As the forearm is generally weaker than our bicep, pull ups are harder to do. The best of course is a neutral, or "hammer" grip. You get the best of both worlds this way. Whatever grip you choose doesn´t matter in the sense that your back muscles will get a good workout either way.

Train both. I do pull ups 2x a week and chin ups 3x a week.

    Boomerism:
    >pull-ups use back more
    >chin-ups are easy mode
    Reality:
    >pullups put the biceps at a mechanical disadvantage
    >pullups still use the biceps
    >the disadvantage causes them to fail before the lats can do anything
    Chin-ups always.

Since your elbows move more in front of your body with chin-up compared to pull-up, a part of the work will shift from your upper back to your chest.
