most jobs are like that anon. you are paid to do a very specific thing for 8 hours a day and years on end. I love to play vidya for example and even that gets boring after a few 100 hours before I need to take long breaks from it.

A few times a month I feel very thankful that I genuinely love my career, have a lot of autonomy and get decent pay too. I never want to be a little disposable cog being pushed around. Did jobs like this as an undergrad and absolutely hated it, I feel for anyone who does this for their whole working life. Brutal.

In another 40 years sure. The only countries pushing for AI commercial drivers are ones that have destroyed their employee base by importing 3rd worlders. Truckers and tradies are going to be the last things to go because they simply cannot fuck up or shit goes sideways and they do so much different shit all in short spans and insurance isn't going to cover any bot that can even attempt both for a long time

pay is much worse than people would have you believe.
unless you got some comfty local route, you pretty much live in that cab for weeks on end. and pay isn't good enough to cover being in workplace 24/7 unless it's preferred lifestyle.

        >computer science degree, but nobody will employ me, lmao
Thats because you were one of those students that never tried. I assume you didn't go to the career fair and go through several interviews during your last semester of college.
Dont feel bad though, id say about 70% of students don't really try at all.

        >Thats because you were one of those students that never tried. I assume you didn't go to the career fair and go through several interviews during your last semester of college.
Yeah, pretty much. I only started looking for internships last year in uni and that was too late. Could not land any CS related, so I took internship as banker and later second one in marketing. I did have side projects, personal website with portfolio, good academic performance, but I could not get pass interview. Then I was like fuck the corp, I started doordashing, at the start of the pandemic pay was nice and not as many people delivered on ebike, so I was easily making above junior corporate job. But this created gap in my resume that fucked me even more. The pay for delivering had been decreasing, so I should try to get back into programming at least as some trainee position, but for now

How can I get a job?

The more time since your graduation/last relevant position the worse you look as a candidate and your degree will start almost looking bad because prospective employers will see you graduated 2 years ago and didn’t do shit in your field and wonder why.

I don’t want to make too many assumptions but if you’re satisfied with the life you described and your approach is simply “I sent out CVs and cover letters and I’m all out of ideas” then you seriously lack ambition and motivation. The chances of some random good job falling in your lap is slim especially as time goes by.

You need to start taking life by the horns, getting creative, networking and keeping your eyes open for opportunities instead of sleep-walking.

not on our rig. but company wide i think there were 3 deaths this year. one guy touched a live cable that had a fray he wasnt aware of. another guy opened a valve with ~20k psi on it and it broke off right on his face. some guy was on his phone while operating a piece of equipment and ended up dropping a 40ft piece of pipe on some guy. i think there was another but im not sure.
the job is as dangerous as you make it, as long as you dont do stupid shit youll be fine.

SwoleShack is primarily American nerds in their early to mid twenties. Nerds get STEM jobs. Those jobs net a near 6 figure floor.
It's not unbelievable that a disproportionate number of people here would earn 6-figures.

Plus you're gonna have more people humble bragging about their salaries if they earn that much than guys who earn a more typical compensation.

        Anonymous

A disproportionate number of people here make 6-figures alright - disproportionately small.

The average successful nerd is a nice liberal-leaning person, not someone going home talking about blackpills, redpills, manlets, recessed jaw, how much they hate women and so on. Obviously there will be people who type things on SwoleShack and act totally different in real life. But when you see very stupid people here, they're not somehow making all this money in real life.

You can't tell anything about the type of people on SwoleShack really, other than some of them are pretty cool and others are the lower extremes of awful.

Unironically these are the fruits of late-stage capitalism. We employ millions of people in make-work jobs that only exist to exchange paperwork between them, and it's become such a farce in recent years that we don't even require them to come into an office to pretend to work anymore. And instead of this being a wake-up call as to the state of their existence these people brag about doing nothing and believe they are cheating the same establishment that is using them as a fungible accounting trick.

You don't have to be a socialist to acknowledge that we are irrecoverably fucked when 45% of the population doesn't work at all and half of the remainder can shitpost at home all day on the company's dime with zero effect on their "job" "performance". Throw in the fact that the most transferrable skill possessed by the latter group is Microsoft Office and you realize that for the next fifty to a hundred years, we're gonna have a bad time.
The irony here is that we effectively have a corporate-sponsored UBI scheme and neither the people who support UBI nor the people who oppose it have the brain power to recognize this is what is going on.

Very chill job. I work 4 10s, telework twice a week, all federal holidays off (including made up ones like Juneteenth), generous leave policies, pension. Salary is 85k with automatic step increases and CoL adjustments.

SwoleShack wise, I get an hour a day to work out on the clock and a pretty good weightroom for the days I'm in the office.
