If you can't tread water for 5 minutes without stopping you shouldn't be doing open water.
Learn how to tread or at least float before any swimming workout or starting training.

I'm officially diagnosed, went to retard school because the government demanded it, had to sit between literal schizos, adhd patients and non-verbal autists, 0/10 wouldn't recommend.

got so good at beating up retards at some point that I got hired as a bouncer but that didn't last long.

OP how do you swim in these murky waters without fear?
I have a mild irrational fear of these kind of waters, especially if its dark lakes with plants and shit in it like pic related.
I dont know if its a fear or some insects or spiky fish or some shit hiding in the water, because i have no fear of these individually, but it could be because I dont know what is lurking in the seaweed and plant mass.I also feel much more relaxed when i wear a wetsuit, have gloves/shoes, and when I'm not swimming alone.
            Any suggestions?

yes, I also have long arms and big hands, there's several professional athletes that train in this lake and I can match them without formal training, dad almost went pro in swimming but back then the pools weren't heated and he hates cold water.

I know you were skinny, my point is being skinny alone doesn't give you a fucking 8pack. You obviously had a good and strong body already.

I dump most of my garden pictures in the plant threads on SwoleShack regularly, they don't care much for alpines though, neither does SwoleShack so I stopped posting there years ago.

When you swim crawl, do you keep your fingers tightly together to make a big scoop, or do you keep the fingers rigid, but mildly separated and allow a little bit of water through?

fingers straight I suppose, it leaves slight gaps between your fingers, never really thought about it.

it's more so my palms, rather than my hands that are big, my fingers are pretty average.

Treading water without hands for that long is physically impossible for normal fit people with heavt bone structure. The whole "rotate your legs in a circle" is a giant meme. Literally only people with body fat light bone twinks and women can do it.
I know cause Ive tried it when i had to do a two minute test hands above water. I had to paddle my legs back and forth instead which burns a shit ton of energy and barely did the 2 minutes no hands. But moving legs in circles "egg beaters" didnt do shit

Bro, you have no understanding of swimming. So-called twink fembody is ideal for swimming. You wouldnt catch anyone and would just drown left on your own after a few minutes at most, let alone if a good swimmer is actually dragging you to the bottom.

How hard is it to learn how to swim on your own in a municipal pool as a balding ex skinnyfat turned DYEL?

      Anonymous

Swimming a perfect time is hard because there is a lot to sychronize, improve and learn, just swimming is easy. Learn how to feel good in the water by simply floating, then try use feet learn different styles like frog style and paddling style then learn how to use arms

      >can't bilateral breath for shit
      >even my flutter kick is awfully imbalanced
      >slipped disk
      >elbow tendonitis in right arm that forces me to do an S pull to minimize resistance
      >about 20 lbs overweight

there's no way I can get ready for a 6km open swim in 5 months while cutting, right?

      >>can't bilateral breath for shit
then don't do bilateral breath. breathing is all about rhythm. If you don't have the rhythm for it right now then don't do it. Later on you can still give it a try when you've found that you can control your breathing more and fit it to a rhythm that suits you.
      >>even my flutter kick is awfully imbalanced
Have you tried just kicking once per stroke like immersion swimmers do? Like I said before, if you manage to have a rhythm swimming works all naturally and is like walking

I think you can manage that!
Its ok to breathe just unilaterally, especially during a race.
About your kick, do you need it? When I swim I barely use kicks. I usually jut kick once for every stroke. Maybe you could try that out? Like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NcXYN2IxOc
Hopefully the tendonitis will have receded some by the time of your race.
You didn't mention how far you can swim now, so can't comment on your readiness for a 6k, but i can say i managed to go from practicing about 2k to doing a 5.4k in less than 3 months, so there is always hope.
Also, some excellent swimmers are fat. Dont put yourself down just because you think you need to lose 20lbs.

Went swimming yesterday for the first time in years and it is a lot more difficult than I remember. Swimming in a lake from buoy to buoy freestyle and got freaked out because I started cramping. Doggypaddled back to where I could stand, meanwhile some 70 year old dude was just pumping laps next to me. Made me kinda jelly.
There were hot babes at the beach though so 10/10 would recommend.

how can I teach myself to do butterfly stroke?

      Anonymous

      Youtube.
Learn to do shoulder dislocates as an exercise so your shoulders are limber. Arm Haulers work too. Practice with the breaststroke to build up your shoulders if you cant pull yourself fully out of the water with each stroke to breathe.

        Anonymous

Thanks, I'm just having trouble really getting the motions down and I feel like my timing for kicking/strokes is off.

I have access to a 25 yard pool to do laps and I'm trying to get the most out of swimming for cardio. I read that butterfly is the best for building muscle, but is it really that much better than other strokes?

          Anonymous

All the strokes help build muscle. Except Combat side stroke, that shits relaxed.
For getting the kick down imagine as you pull yourself out of the water you are sliding up onto a pool deck and want to keep your legs straight. You can practice the dolphin kick first then get the stroke down. Or you can do the stroke without the kick and try to just pull your legs up out of the water. Eventually one way or the other your body will want to instinctively kick at the right time to keep your speed up.

      Anonymous

First learn do dolphin kick. Then do armstrokes every x kicks. First have your head below the surface such that you have to stop after a few meters. Then try to breath while stroking. If you do armstrokes only every x kicks then arm placement will make a difference. Placing them stretched in front of you make it harder while placing them next to your hips is easier. I'd say once you get to two kicks per stroke you're pretty much in the zone and don't need to think about armplacement anymore because you're in a good flow. What you can also do is seperate your stroke from dolphine kicks like doing the strokes with flutter kicks or with breast stroke kicks such that you can concentrate more on the butterfly armstroke. Also use your core while dolphine kicking

      Anonymous

Take big deep breath. Lie on back. Relax. if at any moment you feel your chest/hips sink, take a deep breath and push chest and hips on surface (similar to how you push your chest out right before doing a squat). Keep head surface level, eyes looking straight up with your ears partially submerged. Don’t tilt your head towards your chest. Keep taking deep breaths. That’s all you need to do to float. Key is in breathing and staying relaxed
