spotter bar etiquette

I know these things are meant for people doing squat lifts, but will anyone look at me weird if I use them for a backup while doing bench presses? I want to try for a new PR but I hate asking strangers to spot me like some homo

Well I won't be able to get the bar all the way down to my chest with these things in the way, and if I do fail it will look kind of stupid crawling out from under it

Its called the roll of shame dude

Its a lot better than begging for your life asking random people to help you after you assed out on your pl8 and a quarter

A common way (for me) to fail pr bench attempts is to lower the bar too high on the chest, touching the upper chest instead of nips. To roll out of that you have to literally roll the bar on your skin, an near 4pl8 bar with all the weight on your body since your hands are bussy rolling it. It won't kill you, probably, but it will fuck you up for a few days. With loads you can handle sure just make an effort to toss it on your lower abdomen and roll from there or on your legs and directly get up it's no big deal. Just find good spotters at your gym.

        >Well I won't be able to get the bar all the way down to my chest with these things
Set them slightly below chest level such that when you relax your arch you can put the bar on them and roll it above your neck and head. This puts them out of the way, but lets you fail gracefully

Alright smartass what do you do if you fail with no spotter? Just crush your windpipe?

Yeah use them, hate to see another bench press fatality. but more importantly:
    >Why are you asking permission to do something?

I'm not asking permission, just trying to get a sense of what's considered normal vs what will get me laughed at. I just moved from machines to free weights and trying to figure out how to not look like a fucking dork

The threshold to being a weirdo is using spotters for OHPs like this guy

Thats fine dude. I adjust them higher for OHP.

Why is that weird? I don’t want to drop the weights from 7ft+ if I fail or have the barbell fall on me if lose my balance.

It's not like I want to do free weights but I maxed out the machine and it's my only option now

You can do it on purpose, John Meadows has a great lift I can't find right now where you do a modified bench to obliterate your triceps. Also who cares what people think.

everyone uses them for benching too. there are no bench specific safeties

If it sits at a level where you can do a rep but still use the safeties to bail that's totally fine. If not, I'd advise benching with no clips on so you can bail by dumping the plates if needed. It's noisy but that beats a collapsed trachea any day of the week. What you should never do is bench with no plan as to what you'll do if you fail. There are a few clips out there of people dying under a barbell, it's just not worth the risk going heavy without a plan.

Nothing wrong with it but I'm definitely gonna fart in anyone's face if i see them using it
