Powerlifting is a very fun side gig if you’re a strong lifter. But it can easily become less of a vehicle for getting stronger if you start number chasing too much.
All the powerlifters I knew were high school or college football players who couldn't cut it pro but they were already over 225lbs and strong as fuck so they do that to keep active. Not necessarily. There are a lot of guys who are naturally strong and don't get a lot out of steroids vs guys who aren't very big naturally but explode on gear. Nick Walker for example. Your body's response to gear is genetic.
I'll use myself as an example too. I've benched 395 natty. I got on gear for years and my bench went up to 420 lbs. That's it.

1. don't take very much steroids
and
2. undereat the doses that they do take
If you eat a 500 calorie surplus on 500mg/wk then you should be eating a 1500 calorie surplus on 2000mg/wk, but nobody does that. People will dose themselves up to the eyeballs with gear and stick to their 500 calorie surplus (or mayyybe bump it up to 750!) and of course they gain at the exact same glacially slow rate.
I think what distinguishes "high responders" from "low responders" is high doses and, more importantly, a fearless commitment to eating as much as possible - a willingness to push the calories up every week to find the actual maximum surplus before fat gain becomes a problem, rather than to live in constant fear of any kind of lack of leanness.

So where's the error? It's obviously not in the dosages because they're taking the high doses; it's not in the curve because it fits both roider data and also data from puberty (lean mass gains in pubertal boys vs. their total excess testosterone dose during puberty). We also know that SOME roiders achieve gains in line with this curve too. We know that individual response to testosterone varies; we also know it doesn't vary very much. It's not like some boys get hit by a truck during puberty and turn into mass monsters whereas others come out as pretty much girls. Most boys end up mostly the same after puberty (after accounting for physical activity) - as this curve predicts and demonstrates.
So what else explains this discrepancy?
I have a theory which I'm testing in my own life. I need a few more years of experimentation but it's holding up so far.
There may be a time factor here (only so much testosterone can be processed at a time, for example) that prevents you from taking 100,000 mg/wk for 1 week and chugging cooking oil and putting on 40 kilos of muscle in 7 days. That would make sense. But the true limit on lean gains is much, much higher - I think - than what is commonly believed.

The health risks associated with steroids seem to be dependent on lifetime dose, so yes and no. In theory a high dose for a shorter time should be the same as a low dose for a longer time.
There are important caveats though - high haematocrit leading to thick blood leading to clots leading to a stroke is an acute medical emergency that can kill you in minutes. More steroids = higher haematocrit. But it's also a bit of a luck thing.
The chronic health risks like having a big heart are lifetime dose dependent and this makes sense - the "health problem" is that your heart muscle enlarges and that's caused by the anabolic effect of the steroid.
Basically anything that's chronic (arterial plaque, brain damage, risk of heart attack) should be lifetime dose dependent whereas anything that's acute (strokes) is probably blood concentration dependent.
If you intake less over your lifetime by blasting an insane dose for three years, getting the mass you want, and then cruising for the rest of your life then that may be "healthier" than a moderate dose over 10-15 years. Especially if you undereat your dose, because undereating your dose would mean paying the health cost without the mass gain meaning intaking more steroids to get the mass you want.
The problem is that all of these questions can be easily answered in a handful of proper scientific studies but nobody does those studies because who cares. Helping steroid users abuse their drugs most effectively is on nobody with money's priority list.

Unfortunately the only thing I can do is try it and find out. I'm currently only doing 1000mg/wk and eating a ~1000 kcal surplus for a 1kg gain per week as a practice bulk but after I finish this and cut a bit I'm embarking on a planned 10 month experimental trial gathering data while I do staged increases in dosage up to about 3500mg/wk (across multiple compounds) which should end up with 6-7000 kcal/day towards the closing stages.
So we will see what happens.
But people do eat 7,000 kcal/day (or are reported to) at the pro level from time to time. The problem is that the bodybuilding community is so fucking secretive at the pro level because they all have to pretend they're not on gear, or that they're only taking TRT doses, or whatever, and all of the regimes are trade secrets because they're competitors. It's so fucking counterproductive. Decades of lost data :(. I plan to keep better records.
I'm planning eventually to start a website for collecting voluntary longitudinal data from steroid users across the internet but for now I have to go drive to my parents' house for dinner and watch Stranger Things with my mum.

The limiting factor is not total calories, but protein. Eating 100000 calories of carbs and fat will accomplish absolutely nothing, because calories have nothing to do with muscle building (they do have to do with muscle loss, because the body starts consuming muscle protein if you're in a caloric deficit, but this effect completely stops once you exceed maintenance caloric intake, and the MBR isn't raised that much by roiding).
I do think that people on roids underestimate how much additional protein they need, though, so your theory might have a grain of truth to it. You should try to conduct your experiment with chicken breast and eggs. It might turn out that people really need a massive additional protein intake while on roids to make full use of them.

If you eat a 500 calorie surplus on 500mg/wk then you should be eating a 1500 calorie surplus on 2000mg/wk, but nobody does that. People will dose themselves up to the eyeballs with gear and stick to their 500 calorie surplus (or mayyybe bump it up to 750!) and of course they gain at the exact same glacially slow rate.
I think what distinguishes "high responders" from "low responders" is high doses and, more importantly, a fearless commitment to eating as much as possible - a willingness to push the calories up every week to find the actual maximum surplus before fat gain becomes a problem, rather than to live in constant fear of any kind of lack of leanness.

It's obviously not in the dosages because they're taking the high doses; it's not in the curve because it fits both roider data and also data from puberty (lean mass gains in pubertal boys vs. their total excess testosterone dose during puberty). We also know that SOME roiders achieve gains in line with this curve too. We know that individual response to testosterone varies; we also know it doesn't vary very much. It's not like some boys get hit by a truck during puberty and turn into mass monsters whereas others come out as pretty much girls. Most boys end up mostly the same after puberty (after accounting for physical activity) - as this curve predicts and demonstrates.
So what else explains this discrepancy?
I have a theory which I'm testing in my own life. I need a few more years of experimentation but it's holding up so far.
There may be a time factor here (only so much testosterone can be processed at a time, for example) that prevents you from taking 100,000 mg/wk for 1 week and chugging cooking oil and putting on 40 kilos of muscle in 7 days. That would make sense. But the true limit on lean gains is much, much higher - I think - than what is commonly believed.

The health risks associated with steroids seem to be dependent on lifetime dose, so yes and no. In theory a high dose for a shorter time should be the same as a low dose for a longer time.
There are important caveats though - high haematocrit leading to thick blood leading to clots leading to a stroke is an acute medical emergency that can kill you in minutes. More steroids = higher haematocrit. But it's also a bit of a luck thing.
The chronic health risks like having a big heart are lifetime dose dependent and this makes sense - the "health problem" is that your heart muscle enlarges and that's caused by the anabolic effect of the steroid.
Basically anything that's chronic (arterial plaque, brain damage, risk of heart attack) should be lifetime dose dependent whereas anything that's acute (strokes) is probably blood concentration dependent.
If you intake less over your lifetime by blasting an insane dose for three years, getting the mass you want, and then cruising for the rest of your life then that may be "healthier" than a moderate dose over 10-15 years. Especially if you undereat your dose, because undereating your dose would mean paying the health cost without the mass gain meaning intaking more steroids to get the mass you want.
The problem is that all of these questions can be easily answered in a handful of proper scientific studies but nobody does those studies because who cares. Helping steroid users abuse their drugs most effectively is on nobody with money's priority list.
Oh well.

Unfortunately the only thing I can do is try it and find out. I'm currently only doing 1000mg/wk and eating a ~1000 kcal surplus for a 1kg gain per week as a practice bulk but after I finish this and cut a bit I'm embarking on a planned 10 month experimental trial gathering data while I do staged increases in dosage up to about 3500mg/wk (across multiple compounds) which should end up with 6-7000 kcal/day towards the closing stages.
So we will see what happens.
But people do eat 7,000 kcal/day (or are reported to) at the pro level from time to time. The problem is that the bodybuilding community is so fucking secretive at the pro level because they all have to pretend they're not on gear, or that they're only taking TRT doses, or whatever, and all of the regimes are trade secrets because they're competitors. It's so fucking counterproductive. Decades of lost data :(. I plan to keep better records.
I'm planning eventually to start a website for collecting voluntary longitudinal data from steroid users across the internet but for now I have to go drive to my parents' house for dinner and watch Stranger Things with my mum.

The limiting factor is not total calories, but protein. Eating 100000 calories of carbs and fat will accomplish absolutely nothing, because calories have nothing to do with muscle building (they do have to do with muscle loss, because the body starts consuming muscle protein if you're in a caloric deficit, but this effect completely stops once you exceed maintenance caloric intake, and the MBR isn't raised that much by roiding).
I do think that people on roids underestimate how much additional protein they need, though, so your theory might have a grain of truth to it. You should try to conduct your experiment with chicken breast and eggs. It might turn out that people really need a massive additional protein intake while on roids to make full use of them.
funny thing is that steroid use lowers the protein you need to ingest to maintain your physique, it just happens to also increase your capacity to uptake amino acids into your muscles at the same time so it both decreases the amount of protein you need and vastly increases the amount of protein you can benefit from.
