The hamstrings are one of the major hip extensors, and anyone who has done a few sets of low bar squats will tell you the hamstrings are absolutely involved.
Hamstrings oppose knee extension whereas the glutes and adductors do not. Similar to how the rectus femoris opposes hip extension while the vastus, lateralis, medialis, and intermedius do not. Hypertrophy studies also show almost no hamstring or rectus femoris growth from squats in trained lifters.
