If you’re someone who gains <5lbs/year then the 50 calories extra it burns/day is enough keep you lean. If you don’t already have the body you want, it won’t help you get it
>s been around for thousands of years
Or rather, for about 60 years, as no written proof exists from before that, and sculptures only depict them as meditation poses, not really movement
A similar transformation to taichi, just the other way around. Taichi went from usable martial art to elderly joint warmer.
You know the funniest part about the whole situation with taichi? The ancient art was a grappling art and because of the transformation there's an army of retards who think it's supposed to be some flowy striking art
I did Tai chi for a year with some friends. Really great experience I think, I gained a lot of body awareness and proprioception which I still use today. Just gave me a way better understanding of all my body's joints and tissues, and I still do a warm up & stretching routine I picked up.
The practice itself was also very good, it was super centering and meditative while at the same time being chill and social, and outside in the late afternoon sun. 2 of our 4 dudes including the most knowledgeable guy don't live on my side of town anymore, unfortunately.
Appeal to tradition is a better argument to sway me more than presenting objective facts and I'm not ashamed of it.
I like yoga. Mentally... I guess it's a chance to relax but nothing deeper than that. Mostly I like that it puts my body through range of motions and strains that I do not get from my day to day life or weightlifting. It also improves general coordination and kinesthetic awareness, plus ensures that your bodies fascia does not become stiff and corded.
A good stretching routine would do the same, but yoga has been developed across the ages and so I believe that the motions that have lasted these long years are more effective than some stretching motion a guy in the 80s made up for an exercise tape.
I'd say you could only lift and stretch, but there's no hos around to do that and yoga is granted to have thin, nimble women that are at least demoralized dimwits when not fully available to sex anyone they recognize as their peers
Lifting and stretching is the same as lifting and yoga, its really just the details of what the specific set of stretching you're doing is. Id say either is fine. I prefer yoga.
It can help with flexibility and balance. Some people find the breathing work is also beneficial to working out.
The whole eastern religious undertones are gonna depend on you view on the teachings. I personally don’t get anything from those so I look for more “just yoga” type classes.
Hot yoga can get a really good sweat going and that can as good as a sauna session. Maybe look for “yoga sculpt” classes that combine elements of yoga and calisthenics with light weights that can give you more of a strength workout.
>Hot yoga
I hate that shit. I have venemous, acrid B.O. and I'm not usually inclined to get sweaty for no reason. Does it really have comparable benefits to a sauna session?
Sadly not a joke. Someone thought, "sweating means I'm doing more work!", so they crank the heat to sweat more while doing yoga. It's a stupid combination. Like riding an exercise bike in the sauna.
Hot yoga (Bikram) is a fucking cult and the dude is a rapist. You're better off finding some Vinyasa class to help with mobility and balance and perhaps stare at some nice asses.
>Does it help the physical?
it keeps you supple but it's not much of a workout. i was able to do all the power moves in the first class as a dyel lanklet >Does it also help the mental?
staring up the crack of a yoga chick for 60 minutes brings a certain joie de vivre
No besides the generic stretches. Also it's new age non-sense trying to replace God with "spiritual" crap. If you like it anyways and you know that it's not that bad but you should listen to the fart huffing people calling it their spirituality.
This bro dumb.
Yoga was started by Hindu monks trying to get closer to God by quieting their body for long meditation sessions.
Christfags think anything that isn't contemporary Jesus jams isn't "worship". Can't stand Western Christians.
My sister is a yoga teacher and it really is just spirituality for the mentally handicapped. Indians might do something real but all I’ve seen is embarrassing.
No that anon was right.
Yoga in the West and its associate spirituality are just a sold product. A surrogate for a real genuine relationship with God informed by perennial tradition.
Chakras and zodiac signs are remnants of 70s marketing ploys meant to be sold to you in the form of self help books and stupid gemstones. They have nothing to do with Hinduism as it's practiced today.
yoga is just really static stretching. i used to do a regular stretching routine until i went to the rainbow gathering and learned from the best. what you want to do is hold the tension for at least a minute maybe longer. live in the tension and clear your mind. relax your hands and face and just try and stay in whatever stretch your doing. focus on a particular object to relax your mind. getting personal with a quartz crystal and visualizing it in your head helps a lot. i dont get into all the bunny foo foo spiritual shit but if you do it correctly youll feel fantastic afterwards. i do a couple full body poses and then throw in some dynamics too. then i lift.
i WILL never stop stretching before i lift. but yeah it doesnt have to be a crystal just some simple object that you know very well and can visualize. you might be one of the npcs if you cant visualize things in your head.
If you're doing a yoga pose that keeps your muscles under tension, then it's the same as doing any other exercise. TUT. Time under tension is going to grow muscle and give you more strength. That's all it is.
>I'm a dumb whore and anything I can do so people cherish me is to stretch my genitals while covered with some loincloth for everyone to see
Also, sauce&moar
It is nice functional movement. It is too low intensity to lose weight but enough to stop sedentarism and keep you nimble as you age.
The religious aspect is completely irrelevant, as it should. If you really think you should be religious just join judaism or christianity or some protestant sect and carry on with your life instead of eating post-colonial demoralization religions like anything that comes from the east.
It's worth doing just for the stretching and range of motion you get out of it. I don't really care or give a shit about the weird hippie-dippie culture that surrounds a lot of yoga practices, I just want to stretch my muscles.
The gym I go to has free yoga classes with my membership so I usually go to a session each week or so. Hot girls in yoga pants is just a nice side benefit.
While technically it can be done for free at home, I have found that paying for a monthly membership to a good studio is actually worth it, especially if you do it multiple times a week. The YouTube videos are fine, and it’s good to do, but dedicating an hour to it per day is a big ask outside of a studio (if we’re being honest with ourselves). Most good studios have a “$30 first month” sign up promo and you should take advantage of it.
The benefits of yoga itself is almost purely flexibility. It will not “tone” you, will not give you a six pack or a nice butt, will not build muscle. But it WILL help facilitate improved balance, meditativeness, and contribute towards calisthenics and feats of strength such as doing handstands, doing flips, etc., which I and my friends do often at beaches/lakes/parks. Sounds dumb but I think I get a lot out of it.
Pros: >impossible to overtrain >flexibility, stability, balance >calisthenic accessory >meet a lot of girls >Meditative >can be done in cool places like abandoned treehouses or in nature >not injury-inducing >makes you better at sex
I like yoga and will continue doing it. For reference I hit 1/2/3/4 for 5 reps years ago and I mainly do boxing and cycling now and my performance in all sports is improved when I have a steady yoga regimen. I’ve also never injured myself more than 2-3 day sprains, and even then only can think of like 4 in the last 4 years. I usually do yoga in the morning at the studio across my street but Ive also done it on my balcony, on my parents porch, etc.
MASSIVELY overrated but if you keep your core and muscles active while you’re doing it instead of just fucking up your joints for your ego then it’s actually not bad.
Shit like this is pretty challenging and seems beneficial if you’re keeping the weight on your muscles not your joints
>keep your core and muscles active while you’re doing it instead of just fucking up your joints
Any good yoga instructor should be coaching you into that. They also get really hands on, feeling you all over to get an idea of if the right muscles are tensed. If they're not, it's not worth going. You're also sweating as much as you do from a solid workout by the end. If you're not, something is wrong.
Yeah I agree I just think that in practice a lot of people don’t do that and it’s easier to look impressive/reach further in some of the poses if you put the pressure on your joints. Ego yoga is as big of a problem as ego lifting
Physically I like yoga because it improves a lot of little supporting muscles and especially the ones that stabilize my joints. I feel like my balance is better and my range of motion is vastly improved. I work a desk job and I find that 30min over lunch basically unfucks my lower back and knees after sitting so long. It's kind like self chiropractic. Muscle and strengthwise not a ton there. If you are currently doing nothing it will help in the way any moderate exercise will but you won't get shredded from traditional yoga alone. If you're not interested in it long term take a look at some basics like a salutation and just do it when you wake up or get out of a long car ride.
Mental like anything it is whatever you put into it. I find relaxing and focusing, especially when being lead by someone where I can just focus on the body and task. As stated above I like it during lunch or right after work and it helps mentally separate work brain from everything else. Overall I say just give it a try, the worst it can be is active stretching.
Yoga sales tactics are as women-focused as knitting or interior decorating, so it's utterly pozzed. There's a yoga place near me where everyone states their pronouns at the beginning of class.
If you’re someone who gains <5lbs/year then the 50 calories extra it burns/day is enough keep you lean. If you don’t already have the body you want, it won’t help you get it

You are literally retarded and don't know what yoga is.

That's what I said, but I prefer yoga for no other reason than the availability of cheap women
If you’re mental, nothing can help you.
It can help with flexibility and balance. Some people find the breathing work is also beneficial to working out.

Eat a cleaner diet, Jesus.

Sadly not a joke. Someone thought, "sweating means I'm doing more work!", so they crank the heat to sweat more while doing yoga. It's a stupid combination. Like riding an exercise bike in the sauna.

if your mental health is so easily fixed that just switching one or two variables fixes it. you didn't have mental health problems.

Massive difference between authentic Hindu yogis and 25 year old white girls who learned a few poses and breathing techniques
No that anon was right.

Ditch the pseud shit and just stretch moron. Or admit you just want to go creep on girls during classes.

Yoga works the connecting muscles that most people miss in the weight room. It prevents injuries.

Yes
Yoga girls don’t actually look like this
They have septum piercings and shitty tattoos and the bottoms of their feet are yellow
it stretches the body.
