Red wine.

Is this stuff a meme or are there actual health benefits? If so, which types are best?

from what ive managed to gather the actual health benefits of wine are negligible to non-existent, but the social and mental benefits from decompressing with alcohol are enough to merit it's use for health purposes

      Nice reply thank you.

Alcohol is bad for you and your gains

This is why I’m conflicted. Alcol bad is pretty well known but everyone in the blue zones seems to love a small glass of red wine in the evening.

Wine is still poison. The benefits came from the grapes

Also this is a good balanced response. Physically, there are literally no upsides to drinking alcohol of any kind. It is poison for your body and no amount of it is physically good for you.

That said, the benefits of socializing are real. If you drink in moderation to help your social life, that's probably better for you in the long run than being a bitter friendless teetotaler.

My great grandmother told me one glass of wine with dinner did you good, she lived to be 90

yeah the health benefits being that i like the way it tastes and its fun to drink a bottle while playing skrim

Red wine is high in iron, potassium and a few other minerals that most people with a western diet lack, reservitol had been shown to increase the longevity in mice but red wine only contains a small amount. Moderate drinkers are healthier and live longer than both heavy drinkers and abstainers, doctors do not know why exactly and speculate that it’s due to sick quitters (people stop drinking when they get sick so they are counted as abstainers), though there is no evidence. Doctors now believe that no amount of alcohol is safe and all the benefits of red wine can also be gotten from grape juice. ;tldr a glass or two of red wine a day is probably the most healthy if you are going to drink but it’s probably better you never start

The health benefit is supposed to be from the Resveratrol found in the wine, but wine does other garbage which cancels it out. Just take a Resveratrol supplement.

It's a meme. There might be trace amounts of some beneficial compound but there is nothing in red wine that isn't in normal, unadulterated grape juice except alcohol, so just drink grape juice instead if you want those compounds.

There are also studies that say that people who drink a little bit of alcohol is live longer than people who drink none at all, but that's just selection bias. The category of people who never drink at all contains people with health issues that mean they can't drink alcohol and people who abstain cause they're former alcoholics (who obviously damaged their bodies that way and therefore won't live as long). If you take those people out of the studies, the "no alcohol at all"-group always comes out on top

"Wine is good for you" is just something boomers love telling themselves to justify their alcoholism and nothing more.

Interesting points thank you. I didn’t know they made grape juice so will look into that.

100% true. The biggest several metastudies in recent years pretty much show the same thing: The main results is that while alcohol does, at very low doses slightly lower heart disease risk, it more than makes up for it by raising your chance of a ton of different types of cancer such that your overall risk is always greater no matter how much alcohol you drink. You can imagine it like +0.2 health for lower heart disease, -0.6 for health due to higher cancer risks at 1-2 drinks/day. Beyond 1-2 drinks/day, your risk skyrockets into oblivion so its not even a controversy that its bad for you.

Iirc it’s a meme where you’d need to drink 100 glasses of wine a day to get the heart benefits but then you’d die from alcohol poisoning anyways.

The health benefits of alcohol are all mental. But can also be a source of mental unwellness. In moderation to relax you. Help you unwind etc is fine. It can even help you get through a really shit day like say your mom died and you needed to cope.

      >no amount of alcohol is safe and all the benefits of red wine can also be gotten from grape juice
Basically this, although it's crazy how almost everyone who lives past 90 seems to be a moderate drinker. Not sure what the deal is. Hormesis maybe?
Anyway it does come off as a way to justify a buzz or larp as classy; no doubt the industry pushes most of it. If you're going to drink hooch anyway it's clearly one of the healthier ways, but that's not saying much. People aren't fawning over herbal teas the way they do wine, even though tons of them are healthier than wine by every metric (and often tastier). If you're conscious of heart health and you're not at a dinner party, drink hibiscus or hawthorn or green tea instead.
