The steroids build the muscle independent from the training. The training is just to maintain the steroid + natty foundation gains.
For example lets say your natty bench is 100kg for 5. Then you take anavar everyday for a week without training. The first day back in the gym after a week the 100 kg will feel lighter and you might get 8 reps. The extra muscle and strength came on it's own from the steroids and then when you go to the gym you can demonstrate that new strength.
That's why on steoids forums so many guys say that suddenly "the weights felt light" after starting a cycle.

Sure, I've also made good gains training everything 5xAMRAP, taking every set to failure, I just ended up grinding my joints to dust. A new stimulus will always work to some degree, especially if you up the intensity, doesn't mean it's the best way to go about it.
