                The steroids build the muscle independent from the training. The training is just to maintain the steroid + natty foundation gains.

                For example lets say your natty bench is 100kg for 5. Then you take anavar everyday for a week without training. The first day back in the gym after a week the 100 kg will feel lighter and you might get 8 reps. The extra muscle and strength came on it's own from the steroids and then when you go to the gym you can demonstrate that new strength.
                That's why on steoids forums so many guys say that suddenly "the weights felt light" after starting a cycle.

                The only point to working out on steroids is to solidify the gains that the steroids created so it becomes the new baseline for further gains over time.

                That's why individual bodybuilders need xxx mg of steroids to get to a certain lean mass stage weight. Then they get hard stuck at that weight just like a natural gets hard stuck at his natty limit (limited by natty test). Then when the bodybuilder wants to get to the next level and increase his lean stage weight he will increase the dose to yyyy mg which will cause the steroids to create new muscle. Working out simply maintains that new muscle as it's being built and the body adjusts it's muscle mass upward to the new hardstuck level.

                Eventually pro bodybuilders become perma-hardstuck no matter what dose they use they can't gain any more muscle, and they look the same each year. They hit the absolute muscle mass limit for their body using the current drug technology.

      Sure, I've also made good gains training everything 5xAMRAP, taking every set to failure, I just ended up grinding my joints to dust. A new stimulus will always work to some degree, especially if you up the intensity, doesn't mean it's the best way to go about it.

      this, watching his training made me accept form breakdown and partials and techniques to go 'beyond technical failure' and squeeze more out of my sets. He also does that while adding drops, supersets etc. He trains pretty darn hard even if his form is sloppy.
