It's just one branch of weightlifting. Some people want to take getting strong to the extreme. Some people want to get big to the extreme. Some people want to take aesthetics to the extreme. These psychos are necessary because they test shit out on themselves that no sane person would and a lot of things they've discovered have been adapted into routines for sane individuals.

I don't think the powerlifting community is converting people from other methodologies. If you go for powerlifitng it's because you were already a big dude with a good frame and you like lifting but not cardio or dieting.
