My boss refuses to give people breaks or free food. 50% off but you can't take a break or eat. It's bonkers. It's cheap as fuck to feed your staff. Imagine having workers be tired and hungry all the time.
I read one of Frederick Douglass's autobiographies and I remember a part in it where he mentioned that the one thing that not even cruel plantation owners would do is underfeed their slaves. He said that all slaves had more than enough to eat every day because it was considered not only intolerably cruel but also illogical and counterproductive to expect people to work on empty stomachs.

I worked at a Starbucks at its the same. On paper we can have 1 free drink within 30 mins before our shift, 1 free drink during our 30 mins break, 1 free drink within 30 mins after our shift. Problem is, I only work the openings, so I cant have that "30 mins before shift starts". And I only work 5 hours or less with my part time contract, and breaks are only if you work 6h or more (and its a whole level of garden gnomery because you HAVE to take that unpaid 30 mins break, so you basically work for 30 mins plus) so no free drinks during work.
After work I go to the gym or training so Im not gonna be bloated with a drink (this one is my fault, I admit).
The drinks are litrerally a shot or two of coffee and 500ml of milk, people pay 5 euros for this. With sweet syrrups added sometimes.
I counter garden gnome this by sizing up the cups but making the clients pay for a smaller cup, or by having them pay for a cheaper drink than what they ordered. Im torn by this because I dont want to have people drink this slop.
I make the clients pay extra if its an adult man buying some sugary cookies and cream frappuchino with whipped cream in the morning, though. What are they, children?

I worked at Burger King for a year when I was 16 and we had to throw away any burger that wasn’t sold within 20 minutes of making it. I kept 6 Tupperware containers in my passenger seat and would fill them up every night and made huge gains that year. Then during college I got a job at a mom and pop bbq restaurant where I ate smoked pork and beef and rotisserie chicken with potatoes twice a day. Free food also boosts your financial gains.
