If I only have time for one, which should I go with? Never done any martial arts before.
I don't plan on getting into any fights or anything, but knowing how to fight just in case seems like a good idea. On the other hand, I also want nicer aesthetics, and most boxers look pretty DYEL.
I'd go with boxing
Boxing is not useful for street fights, martial arts in general are not gonna help you if you get stabbed by broken bottle or shot if you happen to be in USA.
Muay Thai is one that is best for fighting on the streets. Martial arts will not give you nice aesthethics, they will teach you how to fight, fighting is mostly about speed less about muscle/strength. Though for me always being athlete>static picking up of iron plates
That said, you wont find any serious boxer that doesnt also go to gym. Be prepared for hours of cardio as well, Boxing is incredibly taxing, you gonna be gassed in 30 seconds
>Boxing is not useful for street fights
Of course it is, it just isn't useful in every single situation, like being taken to ground for example.
>Boxing is not useful for street fights
Bruh
Boxing teaches you to not care about kicks or hits below stomach, grappling or getting ambushed
It doesn’t teach you how to negate those things, but only a fucking retard would ever try to use a pure boxing style in a street fight. It will, however, tech you foot work, angles and proper striking, all of which are universal skills needed in any fight
It's better than nothing
no street bro know how to throw proper kicks anyway
>Boxing is not useful for street fights
how old are you? you sound like a little kid. Boxing is incredibly important and should be every man's base fighting skill. It teaches you footwork, movement, timing, distance control, and not to panic if you take a punch. it's simple, uncomplicated, and takes just a few months to become decent. after that, you just drill and spar once a week and move on to a grappling art like judo. muay thai is infamous for having shitty hands.
OP, do boxing for a year. you can also incorporate lifting into it. don't get caught up in a 'this or that' approach.
boxing is good, so is muay thai
calm down chang
Boxing OK for street fights. Muay thai is better and Muay thai + practical self defense is better(reading the situation, knowing when to run, et)
Muay Thai is best. I'd also include sambo.
Muay thai gives great aesthetics. Only mcdojo martial arts don't make you look sexi.
Do both ignore
also add in BJJ or Wrestling
He's somewhat right tho. Not for hobbyists. Normal fags can lift too but real fighters don't lift. Calisthenics or lighter weights are what fighters do. The fighters with the heaviest lifts are the least competent.
Your CNS only has so much energy, big muscles need a lot of blood, and the time spent lifting heavy could be technique for fighting.
Bjj is great for fitness and fighting in a cage or 1v1 in a secluded area but the last thing you want in a real fight is going to the ground or being that close if they have a weapon.
Muay Thai + wrestling and/or sambo are the best for irl self defense.
Most men unironically cannot fight and get by with just raw strength/throwing wild haymakers. Knowing some basic boxing puts you ahead of most men. https://youtu.be/4u_evUCxGc4
Confirmed for never been in a street fight
Boxing. You'll see less volume, but it's the most fun way to get both your cardio and a heavy muscle workout at the same time. If you like to spend your time efficiently and actually learn a valuable skill, then go for boxing.
One will allow you to kick peoples asses, the other will get you looking nice and aesthetic. Which do you value more? Unless you’re a retard I’d wager you’re not going to go around getting into street fights, however if some shithead comes up to you and your girl one day what are you going to do? Boxing makes you warrior, lifting satisfies the more vain part of you and gets you equally vain chicks (but at least you’re getting pussy). The gym guys will get more girls than you because girls aren’t going around asking who’s the toughest guy in the room, they’re looking for the hottest. But, you can take solace in the fact that you can beat their fucking ass. On the flip side of that however, that’s all you’ll get. A silent pride that you can beat them up, because starting actual fights will get you shot, stabbed, arrested, or sued real quick.
All boxers lift but not all lifters box.
If you spend a couple years bulking and lifting, you'll be able to beat up most people you run into and defend yourself, and you'll be huge and strong. If you spend a couple years boxing, you'll be able to beat up most people you run into and defend yourself, but you'll be small and weak. Lifting, no brainer. Real fights dont last 10 rounds, or even 1, anyway. Throw in cardio and hit the bag a few times with your lifting and you'll be able to whoop even more ass. Should you to take up boxing later, you'll already be able to hit hard.
>If you spend a couple years bulking and lifting, you'll be able to beat up most people you run into and defend yourself, and you'll be huge and strong.
But I'm a manlet
oh i didnt even consider that. Well if youre a true manlet, lifting or boxing wont save you. Id still go with lifting because nobody likes a really small guy who thinks they can beat everyone up
Delusional, try actually fighting, you will be done after 1 minute
you try actually fighting, or actually lifting, or actually posting body.
I do Muay Thai for 10 years and work out for 9. I would bet my life savings on 85kg fighter from my dojo knocking out biggest guy at the gym any day of the week, firstly the cardio levels are incomparable, second if you dont know how to defend from kicks your knees will get fucked permanently in 45 seconds. You think you can fight because you lift heavy but reality is you would get your shit kicked in by any decent fighter, you are slow and dont know how to fight
Jesus christ who gives a fuck. Yeah im sure a trained fighter would kick a big guys ass nobody is talking about that. This thread is about bang for your buck starting something new. Someone who lifts is going to be strong, intimidating and can defend themselves. A novice boxer can only defend themselves at best. Go kick some shit you asian dork.
You are actually retarded, if you take same person and clome him, one will workout for year other will learn how to fight the second one will win 10/10 of times, stop telling people that working out is good way of defending yourself, its not
How you guys are this retarded is asounding. Fighter will have +10 self defense in a year. Lifter will have +5 self defense and +15 strength. Now that i put it in video game terms do you understand gay?
How does lifting teach you to defend yourself? You're strong but if you have no guard and move like a tranquilized sloth then it would be hard to defend against someone throwing punches? Maybe wrestle? But you dont know how to wrestle
>you'll be able to beat up most people you run into and defend yourself
t. never been in or seen a fight in his life
If youre between 1/2/3/4 and 2/3/4/5 somwhere you should absolutely be able to beat up the majority of average folks. The average guy benches like 135 and has never thrown a punch. If you are actually strong and over 200lbs theres no reason you should be scared in public. You can stop someone at the very least from hurting you.
>If you are actually strong and over 200lbs theres no reason you should be scared in public.
those muscles aren't gonna do shit when you get clocked on your glass jaw
blah blah blah. little guy cope. Nobody is gonna punch me, nor would they have a reason to. And the average goober in a bar or anywhere else cant kick my ass, because i dont live in some slavic shithole.
so... you've never been in an actual fight and don't know wtf you're talking about, got it
People dont need a readon to attack someone, wrong place wrong time, you look like someone, you accidently bump shoulders, But you seem to have it all worked out but most random acts of violence are just that, Random. Its worth knowing how to guard and counter, slip, some nice combos and a bit of footwork.
I thought that too until I started BJJ
wrong
llifters who enter a boxing gym often have stiff as fuck punches and get rekt by dyels on the regular
How likely am I to incur long term brain damage from sparring?
zero
Unless youre sparring with psychos you wont be getting hit full force. It will be a few weeks before you can spar, you need the basics first. Why not rotate between the 2?
>Why not rotate between the 2?
I'm moving under the assumption I won't have time for both as an incoming grad student
Rotate every 3 months, 3 months boxing 3 months lifting then pick your favorite
Oh, I see
Why not both?
I did boxing and mma.
Main advantage
of training full contact martial arts is that you will not freeze or freak out in a street fight. No matter how strong you are when faced with novel, high stakes situation your mind will go blank and you won't make good decisions. Sparring will make the sitch familiar, muscle memory will handle the distance and defence, while you can still think about minimizing risks or efficient ass kicking.
Main disadvantage
is that you will get punched in the head repeatedly. This will permanently kill your non regenerating brain tissue. This fact is impossible to explain to boxing crowd who are in early twenties. If you go boxing, being firm in choosing sparring partners who will protect your health is the number one responsibility. Also, don't ever spar without mouth guard, even light tap will make your teeth clash against each other chipping them. Don't spar with heavier people, they will hurt you on accident.
As for self learning.
1. The feeling of distance, angles and balance are the most important things. Those can only be learned with a partner.
2. Punching takes a while to learn, especially straight punches. Many train for a year and still shove a bag instead of throwing punches.
Will doing powerlifting makes me slower in boxing?
Yes
cycle it, or otherwise don't be a fucking retard and realise that strength training is a part of boxing
i punch a bag between sets all out. Im an absolute noob but I feel good smacking it and it tires me out so i consider that minor cardio. Def wouldnt replace a run with it but its fun
I would only watch boxing matches between celebrities or any famous people, such as Jagger vs Bustamante
picrel
I do 3 days of lifting and 3 days heavy bagwork
how would one balance light running (for boxing), boxing and going to the gym? what's a weekly healthy routine look like?
I'm trying to do gym/boxing in morning followed by a run, but feel doing run in evening is better, granted I'm lazy and don't want to be doing fitness twice a day
Do boxing and kettlebells
Boxing is an actual cool hobby while lifting vain and low class. If they have any weights there then it's a no brainer if you can afford it. Boxing alone won't make you look good.
t. low class lifter
boxing is very much the working class activity over lifting you mongoloid
spend a few weeks learning bjj then lift
Martial arts is the best and most fun work out I have ever done. I am more fit now and I look better doing martial arts now than when I was lifting years ago.
Do both retard
And also learn how to shoot too
