Is riding bike as good as jogging?

So after the third day of having to sit next to a subhuman tripping junkie on public transport, which came 15m too late again, I decided to fucking ditch it because I can't just kill the parasites on the spot like they deserve for legal reasons + got no drivers license yet, so car is not an option. The weather's really good, so I thought about jumping on a bike.
Does a bike offer good fitness gains, comparable to jogging? I just see a lot of old/fat fucks on bikes daily and doubt they could jog the distance, so bikes make it easier?
Anyone here bikes to work, if yes, how do you stop your back from getting drenched in sweat while having to wear a backpack? My work place is 10km away, is that even possible for a shit-tier cardio guy like me?
Should I invest in a expensive bike or is my 100€ thing good enough?
Thanks a lot, sorry for my writing, I am a bit heated because of my anger for public transport.

    >Does a bike offer good fitness gains, comparable to jogging?
I went from 270 to 185 in a year with just cycling, not even being really concerned with my diet, so I’d say yes. I also jog nowadays though
    >Anyone here bikes to work, if yes, how do you stop your back from getting drenched in sweat while having to wear a backpack?
I have a backpack designed in a way that it isn’t touching my back directly besides the shoulders and at the bottom. Works well
    >My work place is 10km away, is that even possible for a shit-tier cardio guy like me?
As in obese retard or just never been good at sports? If it’s the latter it’s pretty easy
    >Should I invest in a expensive bike or is my 100€ thing good enough?
It’s good enough but if you wanna have fun I’d suggest neither of the two and instead buy a 90s steel road bike for 300-500 bucks

      Holy shit, congrats on that.
      >I have a backpack designed in a way that it isn’t touching my back directly besides the shoulders and at the bottom. Works well
I wasn't aware special biking backpacks were a thing. I googled them and there are even somewhat affordable, but they look like any other backpack to me, guess I'll have to make a bit more research.
      >As in obese retard or just never been good at sports? If it’s the latter it’s pretty easy
I always was a skinnyfat manlet, currently sit at 62kg/130 or so lbs. But I always, always had horrible cardio.
      >It’s good enough but if you wanna have fun I’d suggest neither of the two and instead buy a 90s steel road bike for 300-500 bucks
I will google them. Yeah, I remember a few years back I had to bike with opposite wind and I straight up had a horrible time. I was moving at a snails pace while having to kick like crazy, but grannies flew past me like a breeze, so I always put it on my shit bike. I think the only way I can keep using a bike long-term is if I am having fun so maybe I'll eventujally have to upgrade it.
      Thanks my man

Mine is not a special biking backpack (those are even better), just a small hiking one like pic related

I went absolutely nuts with biking, spending basically any free minute in the saddle, so don’t expect similar results with just changing your commute

Can I ask what kinda bike you got? Is it what you recommended, this
          >90s steel road bike for 300-500 bucks
Because I believe if you bike so much it's fun but you can only have fun with a reasonably good bike. Not saying you should go out and buy one of those 1500€ ones, but I had really shit bikes in the past and those were no fun.

I got one like pic related for 300 bucks used. Made in the nineties, out of steel and with Shimano 105 parts (don’t know if they came with it or were Upgrades)
I think the most important part is that everything works well. I can’t imagine a well serviced bike that’s not fun to ride around. Buddy of mine had a mtb that was like 450 bucks new (I think it was a Scott), thing was very poorly assembled (as in, gears not adjusted, screws not torqued, etc.) but once everything was in order that thing lasted him for years

Was at the beginning of corona in Germany, every bike was very expensive suddenly, it was also in perfect condition so it was actually pretty cheap for the market

I like riding bike. I got a really old one. Sometimes it's annoying bc I have to keep pedalling really hard while other run smoothly at the same spot.
I rode it like a psychopath to lose some weight (-31lbs) some years ago. Afterwards I started to jog too but I still prefer riding bike. When I got time and weather is well, I love to go outside for a 3 hours ride.

Did riding bike give you cardio gainz like jogging?
Because you can ride a bike for 3 hours but jogging for 3 hours is impossible and like you said, even fatties and grandpas can zoom past you (with the right bike) and I bet their cardio is dogshit.

        Yes
Back then I was able to intervall jog 2-3 hours too. For someone who never jogged in life ever it's really impressive. I admit, without riding bike before I don't think I would have been able to jog. Not even a few km through. I jogged 4km 6 days in a week at the time. I was still a fat cunt.

similar situation here, annoyed about public transportation, work and gym about 10 km distance and I am saving time by cycling to work and to the gym since I am faster and can skip warmup/cooldown.

been riding my bike everyday for about a month now. Quad_gains.exe. Cycling is concentric work only, so you dont get very sore from it and it profits a lot from stronger legs. For Endurancy its all right, but not as good as running.

10km ist pretty ez but it depends a lot on the speed you are cycling at. 15 - 20 kmh is pretty ez.

What kind of bike you should get depends alot on if you wanna ride it in every weather condition or just when its sunny and dry.

The former, you will need disc breaks, good tyres with profile and a hub gear but it makes the bike heavier and a bit slower. When its the latter, v-brakes and slicks are enough as long as you ride on the street. About 500 to 800 € is probably nessecary.

I personally bought this one on a discount. https://vitusbikes.com/products/vitus-dee-vr-city-bike-nexus for an allround weather bike.

Buy a shit roadbike, get new tyres, cables, brake pads, and it's as good as new. If you got the small space required, disassemble everything where there are bearings and clean/regrease them. That's all it takes.

no, its about 1 : 2 ratio. One hour of cycling is about 30 to 45 min of jogging. But it doesn't fuck up your joints so you get do it far more.

there are a lot of thickk thighed white women cyclers. if they have been biking for anything over a year or two, id say chances are high they got the thick lower body type. older ones might have a belly too but that doesnt matter. theres a weird overlap of cyclists who bike long distances to bars to drinkk beer, or eat doughnuts. usually theres a good crossover too of rocker types with tattoos that get sober/kick drugs and take up cycling, so you could find an ex-whore who is now less of a mess but retained her dick riding ways. georgia is probably similar to this if youre outside atlanta as for some reason all the hardcore music scene expats move there for whatever reason. it also has a large blac population so a thicc black girl biker would be a dream gigastacy. also dont ride your bike on a sidewalk unless it is absolutely necessary. you belong on the road and you should get comfortable on the road.

Can I use this thread to ask for some advice? I've been walking a lot to burn some fat, but I ave arthritis and my right knee is objecting.

So thinking of moving over to biking. What sort of bike shall I get? Of course, one can use any bike to just get tired, but what would be a good choice? I feel like the hardcore stuff such as racer/mtb is out of the question because of said knee, also would just prefer a more natural posture than to lean forward like a gay, also no way in hell I'm shaving my legs.

How about those 'hybrid' bikes? BTW terrain would be mostly flat and paved.

hybrid bikes are super based for newb cyclists, i've had several and they served me well until i got into it enough to buy real bikes.

get a real brand name, nothing from walmart. do your research. buy used. use bicyclebluebook.com to find the value of the bikes you're looking at. If it's not on bicycle blue book, you don't want it.

      have fun anon.

tl;dr any of this thread, but biking is better because there is less stress on the joints (ankles, knees, spine). especially if you're over 250lbs. if your bmi is over 35, you need to bike bc running would stress your joints way too much.

start with your bike, fix it up if you have to. after a while, if you find it lacking (shifters not working well, you want a lighter bike because you got hooked, its a bad type for your use case) go ahead and buy one

Bike offers no gains at all, you either have to go for absurdly high RPM or do 500 weight squats on pedals in a row (then see how good it reflects on you). It is "fitness" for girls and 50 years olds, cycling is more similar to something like hiking.

how about you forget about the fitness aspect and get an electric bike, 10km is a breeze on one of those.

If your bike already has a rear rack or has the mounting points for one you should ditch the idea of a backpack completely and instead go with a pair of bike specific bags from Ortlieb or Vaude, pic related. They may be a bit more expensive, but they're worth it for the comfort and durability.
Also a 10km commute is very doable for anyone. Its mostly your Schweinehund, the ride itself will be chill af
