I've gone months at a time cold turkey no problem. During intensely stressful times I've had a beer a day and no more. Then I go back to not having any. I don't think that's an addiction just because I did it every day for a couple months.

Real talk from someone not religious or American. It depends on your age and if you can keep it at 1 a day. I did that for years (1 660ml beer a day)when i started lifting and still made great gains. Yes, it will impact your gains, but maybe only like 5-10%, just make sure you get your macros and sleep right. 1 beer is fine but not free.

I'm starting to realize my drinking is a bit of a problem. How do I go about remedying this? How does one not get drunk when they have a 3 day weekend and no plans?
Alright bro I'm going to level with you and say something controversial but I don't think moderate alcohol consumption is that bad. All my countryside relatives lived to 80-90 and they drank nearly every day. However there were probably other factors at play as they didn't live in the city or got fed sneedoils. Key point however is "moderate". Nearly all the afflictions that are feared from alcohol usually happens when someone drinks a bit too much in a day and does irreversible damage to their body. Kinda like pushing a lift too much and going to snap city. If you really are drinking just enough to get a slight buzz I don't think it can be that bad, though personally I avoid drinking on lift days because I noticed I'm slightly weaker. (Your body does have to work extra to expel the toxins.)
Just make sure to check with your doctor yearly and see if your body is fine.
Forgot to mention though, if you have a weak immune system or if you have a history of cancer in your family you should stay clear of it, as you don't really want to weaken your body at any point when you're on the edge like that. (It could trigger it earlier.) And if you're fat then you're not allowed alcohol until you hit your target weight.
