I was 250 lbs when I was 29, couldn't do a single push up.
I lost 70 lbs, got a job doing hard labor, lost 30 more lbs, built muscle, feel better than I did in my 20s, 32 now.
I quit my labor job because the commute, the pay didn't keep up with inflation. I was in charge of a LOT livestock so it was a lot of stress. Got an easier job that pays more.
When I started I couldn't do a single push up, had to start with 'girl' push ups.
What kept you going ? I tried home exercice and never had the discipline to keep on, I'd always give it up after a few months. I feel like if I could chart out a plan it'd make it easier to stick to, as it was I always felt like I was just doing random exercices until I was tired.

I also spent my entire 20s almost completely oblivious to lifting. I somehow believed it would require a huge amount of time and effort to get muscles (especially for a lanklet like me), I thought the more you trained the bigger you'd get so the big natty guys would train for hours on end every day and that if you stopped working out they would all disappear and you'd be back to square one again. However that's not it at all, you only need a few hours a week.
I really wish someone had told me to lift for even 25-30 minutes full body once a week, with progressive overload and that would be enough to switch on the "growth" signal in muscles and get a slow but linear increase in muscle size during all that time, ending up bigger than I probably could ever be now. Now what the hell could you do in 25 minutes - well obviously you could grow many times faster if you did multiple hours training a week. However my point is you would still be growing and growing and growing with very little time used up, and over the months and years, that would build to something major. Remember that people growing as fast as possible will also start hitting their natty limit at some point, while the slow and steady tortoise would just be slowly but surely getting there. It sure as hell beats dyel.

How necessary is progressive overload bros? Obviously it's the idea situation, but how inferior is staying at the same weight and continuing to do 4x8reps with good form?
One reason I ask is that my limit for regular dumbbell curls is 35lbs. When I go to 40lbs, I inevitably develop forearm splints pretty quickly. I've taken long breaks, tried strengthening my wrists and forearms, used wrist wraps, etc. I know there are other options but just for curiosity's sake I'm wondering when my gains would end/fall off and it just becomes maintenance? Or would I still continue to gain indefinitely (over a period of a year, say) but just at a slower (50%?) rate?
Your solution here should be either to figure out what's causing your forearm splints (bad form or whatever), or to find an alternative exercise that targets the same muscle group without give you issues.
Your body adapts to the stress placed on it, you won't really grow further if conditions all stay the same.
