Keeping a cell culture alive is a harder version of keeping fish alive. Constantly needs external nutrition but unlike fish you can't make it self sustaining like aquaponics (yet? Viable r&d path).
Any random germ gets in and everything dies but fish at least have their own immune systems and will put some effort into not dying.
Eventually overpopulate their vessel, but fish take years to do this while cells can reach their population limit in a week. Might be alleviated by harvesting though.
Might figure out the cost per gram protein from backyard chickens, aquaponics fish, whey powder and blob of meat growing in a jar later.
