Getting Back on the Horse

What's the best way to get back into lifting? I'm thick and wide guy, used to be big and strong, at 5'9 so I'm not a massive tub of lard (still fat as fuck though) and I'm currently just under 250lbs. I'm easily 30% bodyfat but still have vascular forearms and arms. I know I can Auschwitz-mode and get pretty close to 200lbs by the beginning of December or easily get down to 200lbs by January. I haven't had more than 3 dozen training sessions of lifting, wrestling, or boxing in nearly 2 years. Finally got my mesical shit fixed (we're so fucking back), so I'm starting all over again.

Thoughts? Ideas? I'm torn between just getting down to 20% bodyfat and trying to get strong immediately or getting down to under 15% and then trying to get big and strong.

Why does Rippetoe go out of his way to ruin young boys? Is it a pride thing? Trying to convince everyone that aesthetics don't matter, so that people wont be bothered by his lack of aesthetics? At his age he should be more mature than that

250 at 5’9” is morbidly obese, probably close to 40-50% bf. You are not strong and never were if you’re asking how to “get back into” lifting, you’d already know what to do. Your forearms are big because of how godamn fat you are and I can smell you and hear your labored breathing from here. Just get on the elliptical and do basic dumbbell isolation exercises on a brosplit and you can make it. Just do yourself a favor and stop inhaling copium about your terrible health

I have 22" shoulders, joint to joint. When I wasn't fat in high school, I nearly had a 40" waist and an 18" neck. I am the widest guy I know. I was asking just to see what some fellow anons opinions on the classic "cut first, then go heavy" or "go heavy now, lose a little, then cut when strong". I also would have liked it if other people had posted similar questions. Seethe more, narrowcel.

Uncle Rip is a firm believer in the permabulk. 220lbs at 5'11 for a teenager is a very good weight to do a little recomp at, but I understand Rip's viewpoint if the kid hasn't finished his linear progression yet. My friend's father, who was a semi pro strongman at 6'5 nearly 400lbs, told me with a straight face that I needed to squeeze out a linear progression and gain 1-2lbs per week until "You're about 300lbs. You need to be 300lbs." I was 200 at the time.

Cut down to 15% and go from there. If you cut too fast you will lose muscle.

At 5'9 250lbs you are probably around 35% bodyfat minimum. You need to get down to less than 200lbs to be at 15%. The water you lose while dieting doesn't count, so you really need to get down to less than 190lbs. So that's 50+ lbs you need to lose. I would not recommend trying to lose this over the course of any fewer than five months since you are so out of shape. Crash dieting only works for athletes whose cardiovascular conditioning allows them to burn fat with extreme efficiency, something you as a lazy lard are not.

The important thing is that you have a plan for when you are done dieting. If you immediately start bulking like you say you will get fat in no time and be back to where you are now. You need to get down to your goal weight and have a strict maintenance diet planned so that you don't get fat again. It's hard.

I'm the same height as OP and I would have to cut down to 165 to reach 15% bodyfat

I said OP would have to lose 60lbs minimum to get to 15%. I don't know OP. It sounds like he has a large build, so one can expect him to be heavier at a lower bodyfat than some ectomorph smelly. He might indeed have to cut down to 165lbs to get to 15%. If you are 190lbs and you are still fat, then obviously you have to just keep cutting.

Just recomp. Eat just at maintenance and hit the gym. Assuming you are in the US or Europe, you can cut a bit just before summer. Don't overcomplicate it.

The advice Mark Rippetoe gives is strictly for skinny homosexuals and "hardgainers" who are mentally deficient and don't understand eating. When you hear powershitter types talking about eating as much as possible, they are talking to people who for whatever reason do not eat food like grown adults or are completely retarded when it comes to calories and intuitively eat shit like salad and blueberries for nourishment unless they force themselves to eat real food or only remember to eat like once a day.

Since you are 250lbs and know how to eat, ignore any advice given to you about eating a lot while bulking. You will still have to follow a strict diet when you bulk so as not to get fat. You won't be hungry and cranky like you are when you are cutting, but you will still have to count calories and keep yourself from reaching for the pizza and cookies so you don't get fat.

You are insanely fat and insanely weak. You think you're strong but your arms and legs are big because they are carrying so much fat. You never train your muscles so you're actually as weak as the 110 pound skellies. Follow a routine in the sticky with your priority being weight loss. You need to lose about 100 pounds because you are so fat. Walking every day and staying distracted will be your best friend. Avoid goyslop.

By the way you are so fat. Like really morbidly obese. You might have an underlying mental issue you are so fat. That level of obese ismt normal overeating you are so fat.

Let me know if you need help you are so fat holy.shit.

This is such a textbook example of projection it's just boring. SwoleShack really hates people with lots of muscle mass. You gave terrible advice. I'd say to OP, go for the 15% thing, and take the time it takes. 5 months is a good time frame.

Mark Rippetoe is right though. A 17 year old should not be thinking about dieting. Save that shit for your 20's. Don't fuck up your physical development because you want fucking abs as a teenager.

I don't give a fuck what anybody says. Rip's book and material is hands down the best of the best if you want to actually learn wtf you are doing and WHY you are doing it.

I'm running through the LP and the program is hard but it sure as shit works better than anything I ever did in my early 20s.

If you're still around OP, I'd say "cut first, go heavy" like you said earlier.
You'll have the benefits of being thinner earlier, like less strain on your body/joints, (I lost less than what you're going for and feel way better) and you'll see your gains a lot better and that'll feel great. Furthermore you won't have as much anxiety when cutting about losing muscle mass.
