Bodybuilding is an ugly sport and really had been when obvious roid monsters like all of these guys became the standard. Zane and Mentzer, many others had some admirable philosophies. And I won't lie and say what guys like Arnold (even more so outside of the sport) and Dorian Yates achieved wasn't impressive. But in the future, if health and beauty win in the end they will drop terms like bronze era, silver, golden to describe these decades. 100 years from now they will view this event in particular as the beginning of the dark ages of the sport, going off the rails some time after the 50's.

      Anonymous

Agreed. Professional bodybuilding honestly grotesque these days. There was a brief window (mostly in the pre-Arnold Zane era) where it was okay, but it has since evolved into a repulsive mockery of human beauty.

Amateur bodybuilders are, on average, better looking than their professional counterparts.

Brecker and other funny mustach era artists weren't trying to go back to antiquity but progress from it. There isn't a tragic element to his sculptures like there often was in the best of stuff from antiquity. He used high level athletes for models such as these and his work is more abstract than what Bernini and Michelangelo were going for. Brecker's work was to be intentinally brutal and defiant, powerful and without remorse for being so.

With that said I think stuff from the high middle ages and Renaissance through to the very early Romantics was more soulful than art from antiquity. But all Romantics and great artists after Beethoven basically were misguided for reasons Nietzsche went into great detail about. Some great art is still being made in the world even in sculpting.

Her refers to Beethoven multiple times, in The Birth of Tragedy and Genealogy. But I think this excerpt I found a couple years ago on a forum from a work called Untimely Meditations is one of his best takes on Beethoven, Wagner and music: https://www.talkclassical.com/threads/nietzsche-on-beethoven.60641/

I was talking about the art. Same with the architecture - he was trying to make a modernized (and not in the gay modern art method we see today) version of everything that was good about the classics.

As a repressed bisexual, I am fine with that. All the focus on pushing through pain for the pleasure of a better physique makes it seem like an S&M subculture. Men, women, it doesn't matter as long as they are big and roided. I love to see it and want to become that myself one day.

All of the sponsorships, etc. just subsidize the fetish for the competitors and spectators.

Is it me or is this controversy WAY overblown? There are plenty of pictures where Arnold absolutely mogs mentzer. Mentzer easily had the most distended stomach of the top guys. Colombu winning the next year was an absolute travesty though, with gyno and a fucked up leg. Still a great guy though.

If you go mandatory by mandatory Arnold should be placed about 8th. Bill Pearl, an official judge that didn't judge that year because his pupil (Chris Dickerson) was competing, said so. It was the biggest booing contest of all Olympias, even worse than Franco. Zane, who is usually coolheaded, broke his trophy.

So anon, yes, it was a steal, if you can't see why bodybuilding is not your sport go back to your instagram fake natties.

Just look up as much footage of the 80 olympia as you can find, even though there is very little.

A lot of it is water bloat, and more glycogen being stored directly in the muscles. A significant amount will be real muscle growth though. They tend to eat a lot more food to fuel the increased muscle growth i.e. they will fill up with shit and also gain fat
The short term (roughly 1 week) weight gain isn't real muscle. That comes later

Arnold should have won in 80. Watch Total Rebuild. He is better than every guy on stage. Most people go off pictures and not video. When in poses and comparisons he beats Mentzer even in his 80 shape. If it was his 74 shape it would have been laughable. Now Franco in 81 was some bullshit

  25. 4 weeks ago
    Anonymous

Haters grossly exaggerate how off Arnold was in 1980. Yes, he wasn't quite as big as he was in his prime, but he was close, and that was still like 30lbs bigger and more impressive than the next biggest guy on stage. He was also sliced. When you look at the photos it's pretty clear that he should have or at least could have won.

1980 ought to be one of the less controversial Olympia's as far as outcomes are concerned. If you want to see a total shitshow robbery look at 1981. Franco Columbu won that show with gyno and pieces of dogsshit for legs. There are clear instances of fixed shows, but 1980 isn't one of them.
